Plain Chachalaca

(Ortalis vetula)




Other Names: Common Chachalaca, Eastern Chachalaca, Mexican Chachalaca, Northern Chachalaca, Utila Chachalaca deschauenseei

Range: Southern Texas south through eastern Mexico to Belize and Guatemala.

Subspecies: O. v. vetula, O. v. deschauenseei, O. v. mccalli, O. v. pallidiventris, O. v. intermedia

Habitat: Chaparral thickets and scrublands.

Status in Wild: Fairly common.

Interesting Facts: Only cracid species seen in the wild in the United States.

Avicultural Data

Status in Aviculture: The most commonly kept species of cracid in captivity in North America; status elsewhere is not well known.
