Great Curassow

(Crax rubra)




Other Names: Mexican Curassow, Crested Curassow, Greater Curassow

Range: Eastern Mexico through Central America to western Colombia & Ecuador

Subspecies: Crax rubra rubra, C. r. griscomi

Habitat: Tropical forests.

Brief Description: Males are overall black with a yellow facial wattle and white underparts. Females are dark brown overall with a black and white mottled head and crest.

Status in Wild: Stable, but habitat loss may become an issue.

Avicultural Data

Status in Aviculture: One of the more frequently seen species of Cracids, the Great Curassow is well established in captivity.
