There are four subspecies of Syrmaticus soemmerringii.


ijimae occurs in southeastern Kyushu, Japan's third largest island, located southwest of the main island Honshu.


Males of ijimae are characterized by the white feathers of the rump, of which are lacking in other races of soemmerringii.
