Range: The Himalayas from Pakistan & Kashmir through Tibet, Nepal to western Sichuan, southern Gansu and northern Yunnan in China.

Subspecies: Lerwa lerwa lerwa, L. l. major.

Habitat: Alpine zone - rocky slopes and scrub.

Brief Description: Heavily barred black, white and brown on back, wings, head and throat; chestnut streaking on belly and breast. Sexes are alike, males with bright red bill and females slightly smaller.

Status in Wild: Fairly common, remote habitat has protected this species from man's pressure.

Avicultural Data

Status in Aviculture: No data, doubtful any are kept in American aviaries at this time.
