Range: North America, from Alaska south and east throughout much Canada; western US - Washington, Oregon, northern California, western Montana & Wyoming, Idaho, north-central Utah, introduced to portions of Nevada; absent through the plains, from Minnesota east through Wisconsin and Michigan, introduced to portions of central Missouri; throughout the northeastern US, following the Appalachians to northern Georgia.
Subspecies: B. u. umbellus, B. u. thayeri, B. u. monticola, B. u. togata, B. u. mediana, B. u. phaia, B. u. affinis, B. u. castanea, B. u. brunnescens, B. u. sabini, B. u.yukonensis, B. u. umbelloides, B. u. labradorensis.
Habitat: A variety of woodlands; boreal forests in the north, coastal rainforests in the northwest and deciduous forest of the east.
Status in Wild: Very poular game bird, the Ruffed Grouse has benefited from the conservation efforts of hunters and even expanded range due to introductions for sport.
Interesting Facts: The Ruffed Grouse is the state bird of Pennsylvania.
