|
|
Last week-end, we had about 15 young AVIORNIS members, interested for the keeping and breeding of exotic pheasants, grouse, cranes on visit.
Aviculture in the Benelux has a great future. We didn't know there were that many young men and women interested for our birds.
It was a great experience and a resounding success.
Our thanks are due to AVIORNIS YOUTH for their interest in our activity and our birds.
Consult the Tragopan and Grouse fotopages at http://tragopan.fotopages.com and at http://tetrao.fotopages.com for any further details on the subject matter (see date 17 May 2005). _________________ Francy Hermans

Do any organizations in the US do things like that? I would love to visit facilities like yours in Belgium, but I can really only afford US trips. You're talking minimum wage student here (but also a soon to be pullorum/avian flu tester and veterinary assisstant for the summer next year). Does Aviornis have an American youth branch at all? I would love to join and learn more. I will probably volunteer at the national zoo maybe next year and hopefully get a glimpse of their Great Argus family. _________________ "When the last individual of a race of living things breathes no more, another heaven and earth must pass before such a one can be again" -William Beebe. |

For Rockhold Creek Aviaries,
You only have to book your ticket and come on over here, the rest is up to us. I'm sure there are other peoples too who want to receive a guest in the house. Here is always a room available for guests who are interested in birds like ours!
So it is only a matter of willing to visit..... |

So all I would need to buy is a flight ticket? Maybe I could come during the summer for some sort of visit or workshop going on at the time. I have lots of free time. How much does a ticket cost these days to get to Belgium? My passport is active and valid already.
Hmm looks like $500 for a round trip visit from just a simple search engine look up for most European Countries. England and Belgium aren't too bad to fly to! It's less than many bird species! The most expensive is something like $970.
Do you all have any summer activities or programs in any European countries related to the birds? _________________ "When the last individual of a race of living things breathes no more, another heaven and earth must pass before such a one can be again" -William Beebe. |

There is no North American version of Aviornis, strictly European at the moment, hence no youth chapter here. The disadvantage that we have here is that everyone is spread all over the continent, in Europe you can have 5-10 breeders in a 10mile radius, making it easy to arrange and visit other collections. If you can afford a ticket, by all means go for it. _________________ Aviculture: The Worldwide hobby of keeping and breeding numerous species of wild birds in captivity in order to maintain their normal numerical status in nature with a view to forestalling their extinction by supplying aviary raised stock -- Jean Delacour |

Too bad APWS, WPA-USA, or Aviornis don't have a youth programs. They could really help educate young people about aviculture. Imagine the impact even a few more dedicated aviculturists would have. But it seems that most kids these days are more interested in the latest electronics or TV show. Many have no clue or don't care about birds or any part of nature.

Well you don't have to wait untill somebody else starts something...
You 'll have to do it like we did it, start something on our own. We asked the aproval of Avioris International and started....
And than you need some luke to find breeders like Francy or others But most of the time people are generous if dealing with youth, youth visits and stuff!
So who will be the first? |

Hi,
Well, this is an invitation to all of you to come and visit us in little Belgium. You will see many tragopans, bloadpheasants, grouses, peacock pheasants and also other types of birds in other private collection.
When you know that all the private collections are actually within a radius of let's say not more than just 200 km. from each other, than you understand what a wealth of unique birds/pens/parks can be seen in our area.
For some first impressions, visit the various fotopages with links below.
Hope to see you one day or an other. _________________ Francy Hermans

I have seen your pictures. They are amazing! Our country over here is so large and so many people are self centered that the aviaries that you learn of are far and few between when compared to yours. Apparently many permits in Maryland are issued, but only a few permit holders actually let others know that they have birds. Belgium seems to have a lot of interesting animal and plant projects. The Smithsonian just had an article on the "banana bank" there holding thousands of wild and captive banana germs.
I am looking into being able to come over my senior year to visit Belgium aviaries. I am also contemplating a few other things... _________________ "When the last individual of a race of living things breathes no more, another heaven and earth must pass before such a one can be again" -William Beebe. |
