Common Quail

(Coturnix coturnix)




Other Names: European Quail, Migratory Quail, Coturnix Quail, Grey Quail.

Subspecies/Range: C. c. coturnix - Breeds in Europe, North Africa, Western Asia, winters in central Africa east to India; C. c. confisa - Azores, Canaries and Madeira; C. c. africana - South Africa and Madagascar; C. c. erlangeri - Eastern Africa.

Habitat: Grasslands

Status in Wild: Wide range and considered locally common.

Avicultural Data

Status in Aviculture: The status of this species in American aviculture is uncertain, species is probably confused with the much more common and domesticated Japanese Quail. More information is needed from aviculturists abroad.
